Acoustic Panels in Home Theater: Surround Sound & Dolby Atmos

Muddy movie dialogue, boomy subwoofer bass, and echoey surround effects stem directly from untreated room surfaces. Placing acoustic panels on key boundary walls restores clarity.

Why Acoustic Treatment Matters for Home Theater

Home theaters typically require 15% to 25% room surface absorption coverage. Placing acoustic panels on side reflection walls, front screen walls, and rear walls prevents flutter echo and keeps center channel speech intelligible.

Key Placement Zones

  • Center Channel & Front Wall: Place 2" thick panels behind the center speaker to prevent front wall reflection comb filtering.
  • First Reflection Side Walls: Treat early reflections from LCR speakers to anchor screen action.
  • Rear Wall: If seating is near the rear wall (< 4 ft), use absorption panels. If seating is far from the rear wall (> 6 ft), use diffusers.
